My previous masterclass was about how some faces can be very tricky to capture. This post is about the polar opposite of that: the easy ones that offer an enticingly wide-open goal for the caricaturist.
These are faces with so much character that nailing them should be a walk in the park. But…they can still set elephant traps. This is because the artist can grow complacent when presented with such an interesting face, and they forget to really study the features, as they would in any other case. As a result, the caricature gets totally out of hand, or misses its mark completely.
For the purposes of illustration here, I’m using Alfred Hitchcock. I’ve just begun a painting of him, hence the progress shots scattered throughout this article. I thought I’d talk you through my thinking as I tackle this subject.
