I’ve long been of the opinion that if you’re trying to learn the art of caricature, you could do a lot worse than use movie stars of yesteryear as source material to help you hone your skills. Just think of the distinctive looks that made celebrities of the leading men and women of the golden age of Hollywood. There are good reasons why their faces are still so well-known.
As I’ve mentioned in previous masterclasses, I like to reduce a face to the simplest shape possible before I start slotting in the features, and the majority of Tinseltown’s big names of the ‘40s and ‘50s had heads that lend themselves beautifully to this approach.
In this article, I thought I’d show you a handful of my studies of vintage stars, and talk you briefly through some of the thinking behind my likenesses of them.
