An easy guide to commissioning a caricature
Have you toyed with the idea of commissioning artwork from a creator in the past, but found the thought of starting that process—discussing sizes, prices, and such like—just a little intimidating..?
Well, I can’t speak for every other artist on Earth, but I can promise you that I’m really not that scary.
So, let me tell you how I work with my excellent clients when they approach me for the first time …
I paint and draw caricatures of celebrities, movie stars, musicians, and public figures, such as you can see in the piece above. So, if there’s someone you’ve always admired, and you’d like to look at their familiar face in an unfamiliar way, I can help you with that. Caricature is a fantastic tool for bringing out its subjects’ characters, and there are few forms of art that can grab the attention in such an immediate and visceral way.
A lot of people worry about asking what a caricature costs, so I’ll lay it out as simply as I can. I price each piece on its individual requirements, and the process is tailored to what suits you and your requirements …
Drawings
I offer a range of work, starting with simple black and white drawings, beginning at A5 size (which is approx. 6 x 8 inches, if you’re in the USA) and going up to A3 (approx. 12 x 16 inches). As a rule of thumb, drawings are in the £100 - £400 (GB pounds) range, which, at the time of writing this, is approx. $134 - $535 USD.
Paintings
On the upper level are paintings on canvas or board, beginning at around 12 x 16 inches, and going up to whatever size is required. Paintings are in the £400 - £2,000 range, which is approx. $535 - $2674 USD, depending on the degree of detail, content, size, etc. If more than one person is to be caricatured, I will price accordingly, depending also on what you’d like to include in terms of detail and background. Any painting larger than 2 x 3 feet will fall beyond the £2,000 quoted above, and I can give you a tailored quotation when you get in touch.
But bear in mind that drawings can be in colour, and paintings can be in monochrome, to reflect your tastes. If you like, I can do all of the photo research on your chosen subject, and then offer you a range of picture references that I can turn into successful caricatures. Then all you have to do is pick the one you like to form the basis of the piece. And I always produce preliminary drawings for approval, so you can form a good idea of what you’ll be getting, before I move on to a final artwork. The main point to remember is that I always work with clients as much as possible to give them a collaborative experience.
Shipping/packaging costs will apply, and I ship artwork worldwide, using a shipping agent to find me the best deal at the time, using various carriers.
I take payments via PayPal, or occasionally by bank transfer, and I ask for 50% of the fee as an up-front deposit.
