I promised you a quick update on my painting of the trio of biggest movie Jokers, so above is the finished canvas. The client couldn’t wait to see it, so instead of the final composition being a surprise when they opened it, they asked me to send a photo of it before shipping. So, I can now share it with you here.
The main problem with this painting was tying the Jokers together with a background that made sense for all three. The solution I hit upon was clown imagery, as that appears in all of their respective films. Jack Nicholson had his clown balloon filled with poison gas; Heath Ledger wears his creepy clown mask in the bank heist at the beginning of The Dark Knight; and Joaquin Phoenix dons a rioter’s discarded plastic clown mask when anarchy descends on Gotham.
I also included a backdrop of humourless ‘HA HA HA’ graffiti, as this is so associated with the character.
I felt it was important to include hands in all three caricatures, as they always give a likeness a little more life and interest. And I was rather more liberal with my palette for this piece, as I have always associated the character of the Joker with a riot of colour.
I’ve included a few close-ups of the details, below, taken somewhat hastily with my decrepit phone:
Thanks for reading this far. I’m still in the throes of medical nonsense, but I’ll post more stuff that I hope you’ll find interesting whenever I can.
I love all your Joker past work but this is another level. Amazing, thanks for sharing.
