This is my favourite caricature ever. Hell, it might even be my favourite painting ever. Let me tell you why…
The work is by John Hamilton Mortimer, and it’s known as The Oyster Party. It shows a group of pals having a rare old time together in the 1770s. And it demonstrates that caricature could capture character, likeness, and humanity like nothing else, even 250 years ago.
Over the years, I’ve done a little poking around to find out what I can about the painting, and it has yielded some fun and fascinating possibilities.
